In most liftgates, work is performed by a system of hydraulic cylinders, hoses, and pumps which convert stored electrical energy into platform movement. An inherent drawback of these hydraulic systems is that most of the input energy is lost as it translates to motion. This loss means increased energy consumption in the form of additional fuel to an internal combustion vehicle, or a reduction in range to a battery electric vehicle.
